Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipHELLO, WITH ME TODAY ON THIS INSTALLMENT OF "KATE'S QUICK BITES" IS MELANIE CORN FROM THE COLUMBUS COLLEGE OF ART AND DESIGN.
TELL ME SOMETHING ABOUT CCAD THAT PEOPLE MAY NOT KNOW.
>> WE ARE AT THE COLUMBUS COLLEGE OF ART AND DESIGN UNDER THE BIG SIGN, BUT PEOPLE MAY NOT KNOW THAT WE WERE FOUNDED BY FIVE WOMEN.
AND SO FOR THE PAST 140 PLUS YEARS WE HAVE BEEN LEADING THE ARTS COMMUNICATION AND THE COMMUNITY WITH THE CCAD WAY, AND COMMUNITY INCLUSION AND COLLABORATION, AND POTENTIAL AND THAT IS ABOUT THE ALUMNI SUCCESS, SO IF YOU HAVE SEEN SOMETHING CREATIVE, IT IS SOMETHING THAT THE ALUMNI HAVE HAD A HAND IN.
SO IF YOU IS SEEN ANY ANIMATED MOVIES, MOST OF THE CCAD ALUMNI ARE MAKING MOST OF THEM, AND WORKING IN LARGE CORPORATIONS AND ENTREPRENEURS AND OUR ALUMNI ARE IN FOUNDING THE YELLOW PIZZA, AND THE BREWERIES AND SO IT IS NOT JUST THE VISUAL ARTS THAT THEY DO, BECAUSE THEY DO AMAZING THING, AND WE ARE LUCKY TO HAVE THEM.
>> THAT IS AN IMPORTANT DISTINCTION.
>> SO ART IS EVERYWHERE, AND THIS IS TRUE.
>> I AM EXCITED TO LEARN MORE ABOUT CCAD AND ABOUT THIS CHOCOLATE IN FRONT OF US.
>> TODAY, WE ARE GOING TO BE DOING A MOLTEN CHOCOLATE CAKE, AND PART OF THE REASON THAT I LOVE IT IS BECAUSE IT SEEMS SO FANCY.
>> I WAS INTIMIDATED.
>> WELL, IT IS NOT, BECAUSE I AM TOO BUSY TO COOK AND BAKE ALL OF THE TIME, BUT THIS IS A GREAT RECIPE, BECAUSE IT IS VERY FAST, AND IF YOU ARE HAVING A DINNER PARTY, YOU CAN MAKE IT AHEAD OF TIME, AND STICK IT IN THE FRIDGE AND THEN DECORATE IT WHEN YOU ARE READY.
>> I CAN'T WAIT TO GET STARTED.
>> OKAY.
THE INGREDIENTS ARE 4 OUNCES OF SEMI SWEET CHOCOLATE, 1 CUP POWDERED SUGAR, AND SIX EGG YOLKS AND 6 TABLESPOONS OF FLOUR.
>> SO WHAT DO WE DO?
>> WE BUTTER THE RAMEKINS OR THE SOUFFLE DISHES.
>> AND THEN MELT THE CHOCOLATE?
>> YES, THE NEXT STEP IS TO CHOP UP THE CHOCOLATE.
>> AND WE GET IT INTO THE DOUBLE BOILER.
>> YES.
>> IS THAT HOW YOU TYPICALLY DO IT?
>> YES, YOU USE THE DOUBLE BOILER WHICH IS A METAL BOWL ON TOP SO THAT THE HOT WATER AND THE STEAM WILL MELT THE CHOCOLATE AND THE BUTTER OR I LIKE TO USE THE MICROWAVE AT HOME, AND HEAT IT UP FOR ABOUT A MINUTE IN THE MICROWAVE, THE CHOCOLATE AND THE BUTTER TOGETHER.
AND SO WE WILL PUT THAT INTO THE NICE WARM DOUBLE BOILER.
PERFECT.
>> AND GET IT ALL IN THERE.
GREAT.
>> AND THEN WE WILL ADD THE BUTTER.
>> GET IN THERE, FRIENDS.
>> AND THEN WE WILL WHISK IT UP.
>> OKAY.
>> AND WE WILL KEEP STIRRING IT IN HERE, UNTIL IT IS ALL MELTY.
>> AND WHY DON'T YOU TELL ME ABOUT THE NEW COLLABORATION THAT I HAVE HEARD ABOUT.
>> SO, WITH A GENEROUS GRANT FROM MORGAN CHASE, THE HOUSE IS A CO-WORKER SPACE, AND IT IS A STARTUP PARTICULARLY FOR WOMEN OF COLOR.
WOMEN OF COLOR ARE THE LARGEST GROWING GROUP HERE IN FRANKLIN COUNTY AND TOO OFTEN THEY ARE LEFT OUT OF THE CORE CONVERSATIONS OF SOCIAL JUSTICE AND POLITICS AND CULTURE THAT ARE IMPACTING THEM, SO WITH THE HELP FROM THE WOMEN'S FUND AND THE URBAN LEAGUE, CCAD AND THE FUND, WE ARE GOING TO CREATE THE EQUITY DESIGN INSTITUTE FOR WOMEN OF COLOR.
THIS IS GOING TO BE A GREAT OPPORTUNITY, AND THE FIRST COHORT PILOT, AND IT IS GOING TO BE TEACHING WOMEN OF COLOR HOW TO USE DESIGN STRATEGY, DESIGN THINKING SKILLS FOR EQUITY.
THEY WILL BE DOING A COLLABORATE PROJECT TOGETHER, AND REALLY, IT IS ABOUT PROVIDING THEM SKILLS SO THEY CAN BE AT THE CENTER OF THESE CONVERSATIONS THAT ARE GREATLY IMPACTING THEM.
AGAIN, IF ALL GOES WELL, THEN WE WILL CONTINUE THIS SORT OF THE CERTIFICATE PROGRAM IN FUTURE YEARS, AND SO WE HOPE MANY FOLKS CAN TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT.
>> WHAT A GREAT RESOURCE YOU ARE PROVIDING COMMUNITY.
AND SO THAT IS COMING TOGETHER, AND WHAT IS THE NEXT STEP?
>> WELL, IT IS MELTING TOGETHER, AND NOT HOT ON THE EDGES, SO WE CAN TAKE IT RIGHT OFF OF THERE AND SET IT THERE.
WE CAN USE THE SAME BOWL.
AND NEXT, WE WILL ADD OUR NEXT ONE CUP OF POWDERED SUGAR.
>> DUMP IT IN?
>> YES.
AND WHISK IT IN, AND DOING TO POWDERED SUGAR IS GOING TO HELP COOL IT A LITTLE BIT, AND ADD THE EGGS RIGHT AWAY.
AND SCRAMBLED EGGS AND NEVER SUPER DELICIOUS, AND ONCE THAT IS INCORPORATED, IT DOES NOT HAVE TO BE PERFECT, BUT YOU CAN THEN ADD YOUR EGG, AND THEN YOU HAVE TWO WHOLE EGGS AND TWO EGG YOLKS.
>> WHY IS THAT?
>> WELL, THE EGG YOLKS MAKE IT EXTRA FUDGEY AND MOIST.
>> YEAH.
TWO WHOLE EGGS.
>> I WILL KEEP MIXING THEM IN.
>> TWO EGG YOLKS FOR RICHNESS WE HAVE DECIDED.
>> SO AS SOON AS WE HAVE INCORPORATED THEM AND GIVING THE MOISTURE BACK, AND WE WILL ADD IN THE SIX TABLESPOONS OF FLOUR.
>> OKAY.
HERE WE GO.
>> ALL RIGHT.
GO AHEAD, AND DUMP THAT FLOUR IN.
>> FLOUR IS COMING IN.
>> OKAY.
>> SO FEW INGREDIENTS AND IT IS SO SIMPLE AND EASY.
>> AND YOU CAN MAKE SURE THAT YOU GET IT WELL INCORPORATED, AND AGAIN, IT DOES NOT HAVE TO BE OVERMIXED OR ANYTHING, AND IT IS VERY SIMPLE, AND IT IS ALTOGETHER, AND SO YOU CAN COME UP HERE, AND THEN IT MAY BE MESSY, BUT IT IS ALL RIGHT.
>> MESSY AND DELICIOUS.
>> ABOUT HOW FULL?
HALFWAY?
>> ABOUT 3/4 ULTIMATELY, BECAUSE IT IS IMPORTANT FOR THIS DISH NOT TO BE OVERCOOKED, BECAUSE YOU WANT THE INSIDE MELTY AND GOOEY.
THEY WILL POP UP, BUT NOT A TON, BECAUSE THEY ARE DENSE, AND THE MIDDLE IS GOING TO BE HOPEFULLY MELTY AND MOLTEN.
>> THAT IS HENCE THE NAME OF THE GAME.
>> AND THAT WILL DO IT.
>> OKAY.
>> AND THEN FROM THERE, THE OVEN SHOULD BE READY BY NOW, AND POP THEM IN THE OVEN, AND WE'LL BAKE THEM ABOUT 12 MINUTES.
>> OKAY.
NOT LONG AT ALL.
>> SEE WHAT HAPPENS.
>> POP THEM IN THE OVEN?
>> I THINK SO.
>> HERE WE GO.
IN THEY GO.
ALL RIGHT.
WHILE THOSE DELICIOUS CHOCOLATEY CAKES ARE BAKING IN THE OVEN, TELL ME ABOUT THE WAYS THAT THE COMMUNITY MEMBERS CAN EXPERIENCE CCAD OUTSIDE OF EARNING A DEGREE.
>> THERE ARE MANY WAYS THAT THE COMMUNITY CAN GET INVOLVED WITH CCAD AND IN ADDITION TO THE DEGREE AND CLASSES, WE HAVE BEEN OFFERING SATURDAY MORNING ART CLASSES FOR 100 YEAR, AND THEY ARE GREAT FOR KIDS AND ADULT SATURDAY MORNING ART CLASSES AND KID PROGRAMMING IN THE SUMMER, AND SUMMER-CAMP STYLE, AND COLLEGE PREVIEW COURSE AND WHERE HIGH SCHOOL JUNIORS AND SENIORS CAN COME TO STAY IN THE RESIDENCE HALL AND EARN COLLEGE CREDIT, BUT IF YOU DON'T WANT TO COMMIT TO A CLASS, COME DOWN TO THE FREE LECTURES WHERE WE HAVE ARTISTS AND DESIGNERS COME TO TALK AT THE COLLEGE, AND WE HAVE WONDERFUL GALLERY THAT IS ALWAYS FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.
WE HAVE BIGGER EVENTS, TOO, SO TWICE A YEAR, WE DO A ART FAIR, AND THIS IS A GREAT ART SALE OF THE STUDENT AND THE ALUMNI WORK, AND YOU SHOULD COME CHECK THAT OUT, AND THE FASHION SHOW.
>> THE FASHION SHOW.
>> IT IS A HIT ALWAYS, AND IT IS OUR BIG SORT OF THE GALA AND WHERE THE SENIORS GET TO HAVE THEIR LOOK ON THE RUNWAY, AND IT IS A REAL NEW YORK-STYLE RUNWAY SHOW.
IT IS FANTASTIC.
>> SO MANY WAYS FOR THE PEOPLE TO GET INVOLVED THAT THEY MAY NOT HAVE BEEN AWARE OF.
>> YES, AND CCAD IS TOO OFTEN REFERRED TO AS A HIDDEN GEM, AND I WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT IT IS NOT HIDDEN, BECAUSE IT IS A BIG SHINING GEM OF THE CITY RIGHT UNDERNEATH THE BIG GIANT SIGN.
COME CHECK US OUT.
>> THE WHOLE KITCHEN IS SMELLING HEAVENLY, AND THE CAKES ARE OUT OF THE OVEN.
>> YES, 12 MINUTES, AND YOU WILL HAVE A HEAVENLY CAKE.
>> I WANT TO DIG IN, BUT IT IS ONE MORE STEP.
>> YES, AND IT MIGHT BE A LITTLE TOASTY, SO YOU WANT TO TAKE A GENTLY LOOSEN AROUND THE EDGES TO HELP YOU TO GET IT OUT, AND AGAIN, IT DOES NOT HAVE TO BE PERFECT.
AND THEN IDEALLY WITH THE TOWEL OR A HOT PAD OR SOMETHING SO YOU DON'T BURN YOURSELF, GRAB THE LITTLE BOWL AND INVERT IT HERE INTO A DISH.
FLIP.
AND THEN -- >> TRAY.
>> YES.
THERE WE GO.
LOOK AT THAT!
>> LOOK AT THAT.
>> AND AFTER YOU HAVE DONE THAT, YOU CAN JUST EAT IT AS IT IS.
AND YOU CAN PUT SOME ICE CREAM ON IT, AND SOME WHIPPED CREAM, AND SOME BERRIES AND WHATEVER YOU WANT ON THE LITTLE CHOCOLATE CAKE.
AND LAST UP, DIG IN.
>> TAKE A BITE.
>> YES.
AND DON'T BURN YOURSELF.
>> YES, THEY ARE HOT.
>> POKE IT.
>> YES, LOOK AT THAT MOLTEN.
>> YUM.
>> THAT IS SOMETHING I HAVE BEEN CRAVING, DESSERT.
A LITTLE BITE.
>> GOOD?
>> MM-MMM.
THAT IS INCREDIBLE.
HEAVENLY.
IT DOES NEED SOME ICE CREAM ON IT.
YUMMY.
CHOCOLATEY.
THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE.
>> IT IS A LOT OF FUN.
APPRECIATE IT.
THANK YOU FOR HAVING ME.
>> YOU'RE WELCOME.
